Led by Dr. Balchin, the Protein Biogenesis Lab explores how the cellular environment influences protein folding pathways. Established in 2020, the team includes 3 postdocs, 3 PhD students, and 2 research scientists. Their research focuses on key questions in protein folding, such as:

  • How do nascent and stress-denatured proteins behave in vivo?
  • What roles do molecular chaperones play during co-translational folding?
  • How are defective proteins identified and directed to quality control machinery?
  • What governs substrate recognition by molecular chaperones?

About the Role

As a Postdoctoral Fellow, you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Lead research on protein folding and assembly in bacteria and human cells.
  • Dive into the interplay between protein synthesis, molecular chaperones, and quality control mechanisms.
  • Utilize cutting-edge methods like:
    • Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM)
    • Proteomics
    • Biochemical reconstitution
    • Mass spectrometry
    • Fluorescence microscopy

Projects will be tailored to your expertise and interests, allowing you to make a significant impact in the field.

Essential Qualifications:

  • A PhD in a relevant field, awarded or nearing completion.
