Multiple Postdoctoral Opportunities at Umeå University, Sweden

Umeå University is offering multiple postdoctoral positions across diverse fields of research. With access to cutting-edge facilities and a collaborative environment, this is an excellent opportunity to join a world-class institution.

1. Postdoctoral Fellowship in Molecular Parasitology

  • Department: Molecular Biology
  • Lab: Bushell Lab, part of the Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS) and the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine.
  • Project: Focus on parasite-host interactions in malaria, with an emphasis on exported parasite proteins that remodel infected red blood cells. Develop and apply CRISPR-based tools (PbHiT) for genome-scale functional studies in Plasmodium berghei.
  • Start Date: March 2025 or as agreed
  • Key Skills:
    • Advanced molecular cloning (e.g., Gibson assembly, CRISPR/Cas9).
    • Next-generation sequencing (bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing).
    • Laboratory animal handling and eukaryotic parasite cultivation.
    • Bioinformatics and programming (training available but considered a merit).
  • Eligibility: Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, or related fields. Strong teamwork, communication skills, and proficiency in English are required.
  • Application Deadline: January 31, 2025

2. Postdoctoral Scholarship: Structural Biology of Enzymatic Acne Treatment

  • Lab: Magnus Wolf-Watz
  • Project: Study the structural biology of a novel biofilm-degrading enzyme (BmdE) targeting Cutibacterium acnes, the causative agent of acne. This enzyme, identified by clinical collaborators, degrades the resilient biofilm and functions under anaerobic, lipid-rich conditions of the pilosebaceous unit. The project collaborates with the biotech company Vakona, located near Umeå University.
  • Start Date: Flexible
  • Key Skills:
    • Expertise in NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, or cryo-EM.
    • Protein expression and purification.
    • Biofilm studies and enzymatic assays (preferred but not mandatory).
  • Eligibility: Ph.D. in Structural Biology or related fields. Applicants should demonstrate strong experimental skills and a desire to work on translational research.
  • Application Deadline: February 13, 2025

3. Postdoctoral Positions in Computational Biology and Medicine

  • Department: Medical Biosciences
  • Lab: Erdem Lab, part of the National Program for Data-driven Life Science (DDLS) and SciLifeLab.
  • Project: Develop predictive computational models for cancer and other diseases by integrating machine learning, mechanistic modeling, and patient data. Projects include:
    1. Multi-omics data integration using machine learning to build association networks.
    2. Large-scale mechanistic model construction for personalized medicine.
    3. Causal inference combining machine learning and mechanistic tools.
  • Start Date: April 1, 2025 or as agreed
  • Key Skills:
  • Proficiency in omics data analysis and bioinformatics.
  • Programming skills (R, Python, MATLAB).
  • Knowledge of machine learning, PK/PD modeling, or ODE-based modeling.
  • Basic laboratory work and cell culture experience (preferred).
  • Eligibility: Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or related fields. Strong analytical and organizational skills, along with proficiency in English, are required.
  • Application Deadline: February 16, 2025
