Postdoctoral Opportunity in Computational Biology at the University of Southern Denmark

Are you passionate about unraveling the complexities of genetics and its impact on human health? Do you thrive in a collaborative, cutting-edge research environment? If so, the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites you to join our dynamic team as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Computational Biology within the renowned Tiwari Lab at the Genome Biology Research Unit.

About Us

At SDU’s Department of Molecular Medicine (IMM), our mission is to generate groundbreaking insights into the functioning of the human body and the mechanisms behind various diseases. Our interdisciplinary team specializes in cancer biology, neurobiology, genomics, proteomics, and chromatin biology, fostering a vibrant environment ripe for translational collaborations that bridge clinical practice and research.

About the Tiwari Lab

Led by Professor Vijay Tiwari, our lab is at the forefront of utilizing single-cell and spatial omics technologies combined with bioinformatics and machine learning to decode the principles of gene regulation. Our recent publications in top-tier journals like Nature, Science Advances, and Cancer Cell attest to our commitment to excellence and innovation.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a talented and motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join our team starting April 1, 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter. Initially, this position is for six months with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding.

What You’ll Do:

  • Innovative Research: Develop and implement new computational strategies to link human genetic variations with cell fate changes in neurodevelopmental disorders and cancer.
  • Data Analysis: Work with diverse datasets including single-cell ATAC-seq, single-cell RNA-seq, spatial gene expression, and whole-genome sequencing (with long reads).
  • Machine Learning: Explore and apply deep learning techniques to advance our analysis methods.
  • Collaborative Projects: Potentially engage in wet lab experiments, performing single-cell sequencing and other related experiments.
  • Leadership & Support: Lead projects on gene regulatory mechanisms, maintain detailed research records, support grant applications, mentor new group members, and collaborate with internal and external partners.
  • Teaching & Supervision: Participate in teaching and supervising activities as required.

What We’re Looking For

  • Educational Background: PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, Bio-engineering, or a related field.
  • Research Experience: A strong track record in bioinformatics with at least one first-author publication (accepted or submitted).
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and R. Experience with machine learning frameworks like TensorFlow, Keras, or PyTorch is a plus. Familiarity with software containers and NextFlow is advantageous.
  • Genomics Expertise: Previous experience in genomics data analysis.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent analytical, organizational, and record-keeping abilities. A collaborative mindset and excellent communication skills are essential.
  • Additional Assets: Experience and interest in supervising team members and working within a multidisciplinary, multicultural team.

What We Offer

  • Impactful Research: Engage in high-impact, multidisciplinary projects that push the boundaries of computational biology.
  • Collaborative Environment: Join a diverse and international research community with access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities.
  • Professional Growth: Benefit from advanced training opportunities, mentoring, and career development support.
  • Competitive Compensation: Receive a competitive salary with comprehensive social benefits, including health coverage, parental leave, and social security.
  • Support Services: Gain assistance with practical, social, and legal aspects such as housing, visas, and taxes through our International Staff Office (ISO) and the department.
  • Flexible Terms: Enjoy the possibility of extending your contract beyond the initial six months based on your contributions and funding availability.
