The Role and Project Overview
As a Postdoctoral Research Associate, you will play a key role in the recently awarded BBSRC Strategic Longer and Larger project (sLoLa), GlycoWeb, which aims to unravel the biology of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). These biomolecules, present on nearly all cell surfaces and in the extracellular matrix, are vital for processes like cell signaling, development, and host-pathogen interactions. Despite their importance, the mechanisms regulating GAG biosynthesis and their structural-functional relationships remain poorly understood.
The GlycoWeb project is a collaborative effort involving leading institutions, including the Universities of Liverpool, Nottingham, Manchester, and the Francis Crick Institute, along with international partners in Denmark and the USA, and commercial collaborations with InterReality Labs. The project employs advanced proteomics, transcriptomics, and cutting-edge technologies like virtual reality to address these fundamental knowledge gaps.
What You’ll Be Doing
As part of this team, you will:
- Lead quantitative mass spectrometry-based proteomics experiments, focusing on post-translational modifications (PTMs) like phosphorylation.
- Analyze experimental data using statistical and pathway interrogation methods to uncover insights into GAG biosynthesis and function.
- Collaborate with national and international research partners, with potential opportunities for travel.
- Contribute to high-impact publications and present findings at conferences and team meetings.
- Play an active role in mentoring students and junior researchers within the group.
- Work in the Centre for Proteome Research (CPR), equipped with 11 state-of-the-art mass spectrometers, offering advanced capabilities such as top-down proteomics and native MS.
Your Profile
Essential Skills and Experience
- Proven expertise in mass spectrometry-based proteomics, demonstrated through publications in leading journals.
- Hands-on experience in sample preparation, data analysis, and statistical interpretation for quantitative proteomics.
- Deep understanding of PTMs and their roles in protein biochemistry and cell signaling.
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, with the ability to work independently and within a team.
Desirable Skills
- Advanced knowledge of phosphopeptide analysis and bioinformatics tools.
- Experience with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or mass spectrometry instrumentation maintenance.
- Strong scientific writing and presentation skills, with a history of oral presentations at international meetings.
