Role Overview

Position: Postdoc (All Genders)
Field: Microbiota-Host Interaction in Cancer
Employment Type: Full-time/Part-time | Temporary (3 years, with possibility of extension)
Location: Hamburg-Eppendorf, Germany
Salary: Competitive, based on TVöD/VKA standards

Research Focus

The human microbiota, particularly within the intestinal ecosystem, plays a crucial role in modulating cancer development and treatment outcomes. Our recent discoveries, including the identification of microbiota-derived metabolites that influence chemotherapy responses in pancreatic cancer (Tintelnot et al., Nature, 2023), underscore the potential of this research area. As a Postdoctoral Researcher, you will delve into how these microbial communities affect the host through metabolite production, impacting both local gut environments and distant tumor sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Innovative Research: Design and execute experiments to investigate microbiota-host interactions using advanced LC/MS techniques.
  • Method Development: Establish and refine methodologies for metabolite analysis and bioinformatics applications.
  • Collaborative Projects: Engage with a multidisciplinary team spanning medicine, biology, microbiology, and physiology to foster collaborative research initiatives.
  • Data Analysis: Utilize bioinformatic tools to interpret multi-omic data, contributing to the understanding of molecular mechanisms in cancer biology.
  • Translational Studies: Bridge the gap between laboratory findings and clinical applications through the use of human samples and sophisticated mouse models.

Candidate Profile

We are seeking candidates who embody both expertise and enthusiasm for scientific discovery. Ideal applicants will possess:

  • Educational Background: A doctoral degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Human Biology, or a related discipline.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in LC/MS operations and method development. Strong foundation in areas such as drug design, chemical modification of metabolites, clinical immunology, microbiota research, cancer biology, or cancer metabolism.
  • Analytical Expertise: Experience with bioinformatic analysis of multi-omic datasets and/or working with laboratory mice is highly desirable.
  • Personal Attributes: High intrinsic motivation, a collaborative spirit, and a keen interest in pushing the boundaries of current scientific knowledge.

What We Offer

Joining UKE means becoming part of a forward-thinking institution that values your contributions and supports your career aspirations. Our comprehensive benefits include:

  • Competitive Compensation: Salary packages aligned with TVöD/VKA standards, ensuring your expertise is rewarded.
  • Secure Employment: A stable position with the possibility of extension based on performance and project needs.
  • Professional Development: Access to extensive training programs through the UKE Academy for Education and Careers, fostering continuous learning and skill enhancement.
  • State-of-the-Art Facilities: Full-time access to cutting-edge LC/MS equipment, multi-omics platforms, and a variety of sophisticated mouse models.
  • Collaborative Environment: Regular scientific exchanges through lab meetings, journal clubs, and a robust national and international collaboration network.
  • Work-Life Balance: Family-friendly policies, including childcare support, flexible working arrangements, and wellness programs.
  • Sustainable Commuting: Subsidies for the Deutschlandticket and access to Dr. Bike bicycle services.
  • Inclusive Culture: A diverse and respectful workplace that values each individual’s unique contributions and promotes equal opportunities.
